A flurry of announcements are being made this week about products that let administrators more easily manage the data on their storage area networks (SANs).
Among the vendors making news are DataCore, who will launch statistical reporting software, and EMC, which is announcing a set of storage services for its information lifecycle management (ILM) strategy and new software for archiving database transactions.
DataCore's SANmaestro software gathers statistical information and resource management information from the SAN, which allows users to do charge-back, capacity and utilization planning.
EMC is introducing a critical part of its ILM strategy, says Jamie Gruener, senior analyst for the Yankee Group. Included is a set of storage services that will help customers plan, build and manage ILM projects in their organizations.
"As EMC rolls out products and services supporting ILM, they need to make sure they capture best practices they can use
in the future," says Gruener.
Gruener suggests that EMC will make additional acquisitions to bolster the services portion of ILM strategy hierarchy.
"If I were a betting man, I'd say EMC will acquire professional services companies to assist with this process in the coming 12 to 18 months."
In EMC's fourth quarter 2003 results, services represented 32% of sales.
EMC also announced another part of its ILM hierarchy - that of the management of structure database data. EMC's DatabaseXtender software was acquired in an OEM relationship from Outerbay Technologies. It lets IT monitor database growth and usage and identify and migrate inactive data from tier to tier of storage.
DataCore's SANmaestro starts at $15,000 and is available now. Prices were not given for EMC's DatabaseXtender.
