Cisco pumped new life into its Catalyst switch line last week, announcing new 10 Gigabit Ethernet products, including the first standards-based copper 10G product.

The new copper 10G port modules use the 10GBase-CX4 standard, and fit into 10G blades on the Catalyst 6500. With a range of only 50 feet over IBX4, or Infiniband copper cabling, the ports are aimed at data center switch-to-switch or server cluster connection. Cisco's other 10G product was a muilt-mode fiber module. While shorter in range then single-mode fiber, multi-mode is more widely deployed, industry experts say. Cisco says the new multi-mode port will let enterprise utilize existing multimode fiber plants for 10G.

Along with several other upgrades to the Catalyst 6500, and a new 3750 with a 10G uplinks, Cisco also released a 10-slot version of the Catalyst 4500, as well as a new management module for the switch. Cisco says the switch is targeted at high-capacity wiring closets in large enterprises. The vendor says customers were seeking an alternative to the more expensive 6500 for large wiring closets, where port densities are more important than advanced routing or network service capabilities. The new 10-slot chassis and management module also allow 802.3af power over Ethernet, or Cisco proprietary PoE, to be distributed to ever port - up to 360 - on the new 10-slot 4500.
