Toshiba today launched a free software utility (really tiny link at the bottom of the page) aimed at simplifying Internet connectivity at home, the office or while on the road at a wireless LAN public hot spot. The MyConnect software lets a notebook PC automatically detect available wireless networks, and offers a one-click process to connect to the Internet from a wireless access point or Ethernet line, Toshiba says.
When users find a public Internet connection that requires payment, the software shows a location directory of MyConnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet locations across the country, and lets them connect for a 14-day free trial offer of Toshiba's MyConnect Internet Access Service Plan (aha! The catch!).
Toshiba's plan offers unlimited Internet access via Wi-Fi, broadband cable, DSL or dial-up connection for $39.95 per month, or $99.95 for a three-month subscription. Toshiba says it replaces the need to make several payments for different Internet access in public places with one low monthly price.
