Network World Fusion, 10/29/04
Sony Ericsson this week launched a new quad-band PC Card that combines Wi-Fi wireless LAN connectivity with wide-area wireless connectivity (over an EDGE network).
The GC89 will be able to connect to Wi-Fi networks, in addition to EDGE and GPRS networks over the GSM 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz bands worldwide, Sony Ericsson said. In addition, it will be compatible with Release 4 of the EDGE standard, which Sony Ericsson says addresses the matter of uplink speeds for users who need to send large amounts of data over the network.
The card will be compatible with both Windows and Macintosh computers. Pricing and carrier relationships were not announced, although the company did say commercial availability would likely happen in Q1 2005.
