Sony Electronics this week launched its second-generation DVD+R Double Layer (DL) burners, which have now reached 16x speeds. The company is offering an internal model (DRU-710A, $180, shipping now) and an external model (DRX-710UL, $280, shipping in October).
The drives can also support 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD+/-RW, 48x CD-R and 24x CD-RW recording speeds. With the 2.4x DVD+R DL recording, Sony says users can burn up to four hours of MPEG-2 video (or up to 8.5G bytes of data) onto compatible DVD+R DL media.
The internal DRU-710A has an ATAPI interface, and includes a black replacement bezel for users with black-covered PC cases. The external DRX-710UL includes Sony's i.LINK (IEEE 1394) interface, as well as a USB 2.0 port, the company said. Bundled software includes Nero Burning ROM 6 SE and Nero Express 6 (CD/DVD mastering, writing and copying), VisionExpress 2 (VCD/SVCD and DVD authoring software), InCD 4 (packet writing software), Nero ShowTime (DVD player), Nero BackItUp (backup software), NMediaPlayer/Wave Editor (management and jukebox software), Nero Cover Designer (disc label creator), and Nero Toolkit (utilities for drive analysis).
