Nothing seems to stop cell phone makers and carriers from launching new phones during the year; here are the latest three devices that you might want to pick up if your current wireless contract has expired…
As part of a promotion for the Summer Olympics, AT&T Wireless and Samsung launched the SGH-e316, a color phone that includes news alerts from the Olympic Games in Athens.
The $199 phone (after $120 in rebates and a two-year contract) is now available, includes two color screens (internal and external), enhanced messaging services, and an embedded digital camera. The news alerts from the Olympics will be part of the carrier's mMode service, and users will be able to check schedules, scores, download Olympic-themed ring tones, and do instant messaging ("The U.S. just won gold in Judo!")… For more details, go to the AT&T Wireless Web site.
Samsung also launched another phone -- the SGH-d415, with T-Mobile. The d415 is a slider phone that a user can "slide up" to reveal a large display and keypad. The d415 also includes a 180-degree rotating lens, integrated VGA camera. The digital camera also includes multiple shot, digital zoom and brightness adjustment features. The d415 also features a color screen that supports 262,000 colors, the company said.
The $299 phone works on T-Mobile's GSM/GPRS 1900 voice and data network. For more details, go to Samsung's wireless Web site or the T-Mobile Web site.
And finally, AT&T Wireless and Nokia teamed up to bring a new EDGE phone to the U.S. The Symbian OS and Series 60 Platform-based Nokia 6620 smart phone is now available on AT&T's EDGE network. The 6620 will be able to download data at speeds of about three times faster than GPRS, AT&T Wireless says. In addition to standard phone features, the 6620 includes a digital camera that can capture still and video images, Nokia says.
The 6620 is now available for $299.99 with a two-year agreement (after rebates), and service plans designed for heavy data usage start at $24.99 per month, AT&T Wireless said.
AT&T Wireless is also adding new full-motion video and audio streaming applications on its mMode platform to highlight features of the EDGE network.
For example, the Real-rTV service is a subscription service ($4.95 per month) that lets users receive video and audio content from Fox Sports, ABC News, CBS MarketWatch, Sporting News Radio, NPR, The Weather Channel, movie trailers from Hollywood.com, and more. Personalized alerts can be created that notifies a user when new programming becomes available.
The WorldMate application gives representations of up to five different time zones, and includes data such as current weather conditions and a currency converter. Data is updated over-the-air through the mMode service.
For more information on the new applications, go to the mMode Web site.
