Sony this week announced its VAIO Pocket hard drive digital music player, which aims to put up to 26,000 songs in your pocket and includes a 2.2-inch color screen so you can see photos and album covers. The device will cost about $500 and will be available in September nationwide and at Sony's Web site.
The VAIO Pocket has a 40G-byte hard drive, and a USB 2.0 port for transferring music and photos to the device. Software will let you choreograph a slide show of personal photos to watch on the QVGA LCD screen, Sony says. A USB streaming feature lets you download photos from a Sony Cybershot digital still camera directly to the device as well. A rechargeable lithium ion battery promises up to 20 hours of continuous playback.
Music can be loaded onto the device from a user's CD collection, or downloaded from Sony's Connect online music store. SonicStage music management software is included to help users organize and import songs, albums and playlists. The software plays back ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus files, and also supports MP3, WAV and WMA formats.
The device includes a new user interface, which Sony calls Grid Sense. The interface is a grid of raised dots that work similar to a PC touchpad, Sony says. The Grid Sense allows for more precise song selection and navigation, the company added.
