Stream iTunes to your stereo

I'm always pleasantly surprised when Apple comes out with a new device, and it's no different today. The company today launched its AirPort Express device, an 802.11g base station that acts as a wireless access point, as well as a device that can stream iTunes music from a Mac or PC to a stereo system.

airportexpress.jpgThe device is so small (it looks like a power adapter, but with the addition of an Ethernet port and audio input ports) that users can pack it into a travel bag and use it on the road to provide wireless Internet access through a hotel's broadband connection (but remember, kids, to always check the terms of service).

The AirTunes software will work with iTunes (version 4.6, available later this week as a free download) to let users stream their playlists and songs over the wireless connection to the AirPort Express, connected to a stereo. The iTunes 4.6 version will automatically be able to detect "remote speakers," and when those speakers are selected, music will be sent to the AirPort Express in order to be played remotely, Apple said.

The AirPort Express will be available in July through Apple's retail channels for $129, although you can immediately order it through the Apple Web site.
