Canon today announced two new 2.2 megapixel camcorders that include both digital video and digital photography features. The Optura 30 ($899) and Optura 40 ($999) Mini DV camcorders will be available in late May, Canon said.
The Optura 30 includes a 12x optical zoom and 240x digital zoom, Canon's Image Stabilizer (reduces camcorder "shake" syndrome), a high resolution 16:9 widescreen mode, low-light shooting features, and support for the Picture Transfer Protocol that lets users transfer data on Windows XP or Mac OS X (version 10.1) without installing dedicated drivers.
The Optura 40 includes the features of the Optura 30, but with a 14x optical zoom and 280x digital zoom. In addition, it includes a manual audio level control feature and Canon's Super Night Mode / Night Plus function, which gives users the option of adding light by automatically turning on and off a white LED in front of the camera.
Both models support digital photos up to 1,632 by 1,224 resolution (2.2 megapixel), and can capture images on a Secure Digital or MultiMedia Card. The camcorders also are PictBridge compatible, which lets users transfer images directly to PictBridge-compatible photo printers.
