Nextel wasted no time in leveraging its sponsorship of NASCAR (now called Nextel Cup instead of Winston Cup). The carrier today launched a series of NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Driver Phones, modeled after 10 different drivers.
The covers of the phone display a driver's number and have a unique design based on the driver's colors, logos, etc. For fans who can't decide who to root for, the company has an 11th phone (The Nextel Cup Series Phone) that displays a checkered flag.
The Motorola i736 handsets are clamshell-style phones that include an internal color LCD screen, external display with caller ID functions, sepaker phone, voice recorder, a 600-contact address book, and GPS location-based technology. The phones also connect to Nextel's Nationwide Direct Connect walkie-talkie service.
In addition, the phones will include features exclusive to the driver, such as wallpaper with the driver's picture and logo, ring tones (revving engine, national anthem and other tunes), a digital racing stop watch. NASCAR-branded accessories, including car chargers and carying cases, will also be available.
The Driver Phones will cost $349.99, and require a two-year service agreement. The non-driver Series Phone (checkered flag) will cost $299.99 with a two-year agreement.
