I had an early meeting with Actiontec officials, who showed me a demo of their new digital wireless media player, which lets users take their media content (movies, photos, music, etc.) and stream them wirelessly (by connecting an 802.11b or 802.11g PC Card in a slot) to either a TV or stereo system (in the case of music). An Ethernet port is also available for direct network connection.
The player was announced in December, and at this show the company announced a new version that will include an 8-in-1 media card reader that will automatically play content directly from the card.
The appliance will include media software that users can install on all networked computers (so users can stream content from several locations, not just one media server), and will also have the ability to stream Internet radio stations. Furthermore, a Web browser will be included to let users Internet surf while watching their TV. The new player will be available in February for around $200. Go to the Actiontec Web site for more details.
