Network World Fusion, 12/17/03

Axis Communications this week launched a network camera that uses MPEG-2 compression for higher quality images for security and surveillance usage. The $1,999 Axis 230 MPEG-2 Network Camera offers 30 frames per second of DVD-quality video and synchronized audio over IP networks, Axis said.

Axis-230-cam.jpgThe camera offers video up to 720 by 576 pixels, an 18x optical zoom lens (and 12x digital zoom), and a built-in microphone for one-way audio from camera to the viewer. Additional features include an audio-based alarm that can send alerts to administrators based on selected volume levels. The camera also supports multicasting over a LAN, which allows for an unlimited number of simultaneous viewers, Axis said. The camera can be controlled over the Internet via a Web browser, the company added.

The camera can display color video in daytime lighting, and black and white video in the dark, with or without an infrared illuminator, Axis said. The Axis 230 is expected to be available in Q1 2004. For more information, go to the Axis Web site.
