Network World Fusion, 09/18/03

The show hasn’t officially started yet (it will about 90 minutes from now), but there’s still a lot of energy at the show. The opening cocktail party held Wednesday night was well attended, and I got to meet some of the vendors and get a sneak peek at what they were preparing to do.

The Logitech Bluetooth cordless mouse and mouse-and-keyboard looks pretty interesting, as the software included will not only let you rid some of your cabling issues, but will let you create a Bluetooth connectivity zone through your PC. If you have another high-speed connection, such as an Ethernet cable attached to a T-1 line, or cable/DSL broadband, or even 802.11b wireless, you should be able to use the Bluetooth hub connection on your PC (via the USB port connection for the Bluetooth mouse) and give that high-speed connection to other Bluetooth devices. Logitech says that initially this will give devices such as Bluetooth-enabled Pocket PCs the ability to connect to the Internet faster. For Palm-based Bluetooth devices, a software update will likely be needed.

I’m also excited to see the demonstration by Tapwave of its new Zodiac devices. The devices are converged devices – not of a phone and a PDA, but of a PDA and a Game Boy. The Palm OS-based device is also designed to be a game-playing device, but with advanced PDA features such as embedded Bluetooth, USB connection, and Secure Digital and MultiMedia Card (MMC) expansion slots. The $299 version will have 32M bytes of RAM, and the $399 device will have 128M bytes of RAM. In addition to games and productivity applications, the devices will have multimedia applications (MP3 and video playing).

Orders are currently being taken for the device on the Tapwave Web site.
