Hitachi Global Storage Technologies this week announced it is shipping qualification samples of its 4G-byte Microdrive to consumer product manufacturers. The company says its one-inch diameter drive has a 70% faster data transfer rate than previous versions.
The hard disk drive weighs over a half-ounce (16 grams) and is about the size of a matchbook, Hitachi says. Manufacturers that are looking at the Microdrive for their current or future products include Blaupunkt, Kodak, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Sigma and Sony, Hitachi said. The drive is designed to the Compact Flash Type II standard, and will be compatible with devices that accept CF+ Type II media, the company added. The Microdrive will also be formatted using the FAT32 file system, which goes beyond the 2G-byte limitation of the FAT16 file system, Hitachi said.
The company said it expects devices with the Microdrive will be available to consumers this November for about $499.
