Network World Fusion, 05/16/03

Verbatim and Peripherals Group (a subsidiary of CenDyne) this week announced “dual-format” DVD recorders that support four different DVD formats: DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD-R. The Verbatim 4X Producer 44 Dual-Format DVD Recorders also support CD-R and CD-RW formats.

VerbatimVBTDVDL4Xhr.jpgThe drives come in either external (VBTDVDL4X, $399) or internal (VBTDVDL4A, $299) versions, and support speed rates of 4x for DVD+R and DVD-R formats, 2.4x speed for DVD+RW, 2x for DVD-RW, 16x for CD-R and 10x for CD-RW. The drives also read DVD-ROM, DVD movies and CD-ROM media. The internal drive has an IDE interface, and the external drive connects via a USB 2.0 or FireWire port.

The recorders come with a bundled “View Me First” tutorial that guides customers through the process of installation and the art of DVD / CD recording, the company said. The drives contain the following bundled software:

  • Sonic MyDVD4, DVD authoring and recording software.
  • WinDVD, which lets users burn and play their own DVDs as well as DVD movies and software on a PC.
  • InCD, which provides drag and drop or direct save options within applications.
  • MusicMatch software for playing, recording and organizing music files.
  • Nero Express, CD and DVD burning and creation software.

The drives are now shipping, CenDyne said. For more information, go to the CenDyne or Verbatim Web sites.

COuld you tell me if there is a dvd player/ recorder that can be used externally on a laptop, and also independently with a television.

I recently purchased a Verbatim DVD Producer 44 and I would have to say it was the worst purchase I have ever made. The DVD Writer is not compatible with alot of different DVD brands and the support is horrible. The toll free support number and the free web adress both do not work. If I had the choice right now, I'd pay a little more and buy a sony.
