Socket Communications recently announced it will enable 802.1x support on its Low Power wireless LAN Compact Flash card. This will give authentication at the client and server levels for Pocket PC and other mobile devices, the company said.
Socket said that 802.1x security lessens the vulnerabilities associated with some 802.11b wireless LANs by enabling standard authentication security protocols (EAP/TLS, PEAP), centralized user identification, dynamic key management and accounting. Socket also includes enhanced Mobile WLAN Tools software, which supports Windows XP, ME, 2000 and 98 operating systems and lets users choose a variety of profiles (office, home, hot spots, etc.) for their device.
The Compact Flash card is now available through Socket's Web site, other retailers, and costs $169 ($130 to $140 street price). Current owners of the card can download the new enhanced software for free beginning in January 2003.
