Microsoft this week unveiled its Web conferencing service, Live Meeting, and next month will release Office 2003 and Live Communications Server (instant messaging/presence) under the marketing tagline Office System. The "system" name, which also is used for Windows (Windows Server System), makes for a convenient umbrella when trying to fit technologies together. But experts say Office System won't become the collaboration linchpin Microsoft hopes it will be until Microsoft adds support for Web services interfaces that will allow users to integrate collaborative features into applications. Analysts say watch for those developments to gauge the real progress of Microsoft's collaboration strategy, and be prepared for wide spread upgrades if you like what you see. The "system" doesn't include Windows technologies dated before 2003.
