The ride continues for #15-seed Christine Heckart, president of TeleChoice, as she beat out Linux creator Linus Torvalds, a #3-seed, 260-166. Torvalds did have a lead overnight, but with some obvious voter fraud eliminated, Heckart claimed victory. Also advancing is #5-seed Mario Mazzola, chief development officer at Cisco, over #9-seed Joe Nacchio, CEO at Qwest, with a 202-132 victory. Comments:
"Come on Linus is Linux and hey, it's Super Mario!" ... "Linux hasn't really been major in networking to date, but TeleChoice does influence the networking community quite a bit." ... "Linux rocks... Cisco rocks." ... "I reluctantly vote for Linus because he only represents the power in networking. The real power behind him is th 1000s of programmers who work for his cause for free. "
Jan 31:
Another #1-seed has fallen by the wayside. This time it's Microsoft's Bill Gates getting beat at the buzzer by #9-seed Joe Nacchio, CEO of Qwest, 96-90. Our other match was a blowout as Cisco employees rallied around #5-seed Mario Mazzola, Cisco's chief development officer, as he beat #13-seed Phil Zimmermann, creator of PGP, 160-70. Comments:
"Well, Gates and Mazzola make much bigger decisions." ... "Joe knows!" ... "Gates and Zimmermann, no contest. 1. Both make software found on terrorist laptops. 2. Both made products with horrible user interfaces. 3. It took three releases to get both PGP and Windows right. and 4. Drum roll please. The goverment wants both these guys in jail. So they must be cool, right." ... "Joe has the balls and Cisco makes good biz sense."
Jan 25:
The impropable ride of TeleChoice President Christine Heckart, a #15 seed, continues as she advances over #10-seed Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, a U.S. District Court judge, 132-73. Joining Heckart in Round 3 is Linux creator and #3-seed Linus Torvalds, who defeated #6-seed Ivan Seidenberg, co-CEO of Verizon, 135-50. Comments:
"There's a saying when you work in the integration business: 'Phone Guys Suck'. Therefore Linus wins in a rout. And the Judge, well if it ever gets to her making a ruling she could radically affect the Networking business as a whole." ... "Seidenberg's wireless network is nothing without operating systems to run on it."
Round 1:
Jan 18:
As expected, #1 seed Bill Gates dispatched #16-seed John Walecka, the founding partner of Redpoint Ventures, 103-27. However, #13-seed Phil Zimmermann, creator of PGP, upset #4-seed Ray Ozzie, CEO of Groove Networks and the brains behind Lotus Notes, 102-71. Comments:
"1) Who ever heard of john Walecka? 2) Who ever heard of Groove Networks?" ... "I am continued to be amazed at Microsoft's success selling an inferior product." ... "Bill Gates is the 400 lbs. gorilla of the computer industry. If you're on the net, Bill is involved. Phil is cool." ... "Come on, it's Bill freakin' Gates." ... "John Walecka is NOT Bill Gates. Phil forced the US govt to accept the need for high strength security."
Jan 14:
The king of Linux, #3-seed Linux Torvalds, easily defeated #14-seed Frank Dzubeck of Communications Network Architects, 186-25. In the other match, it looks like Cisco employees came out in support of their own as #5-seed Mario Mazzola crushed UNH Interoperability Lab Director and #12 seed Scott Valcourt, 350-44. Comments:
"Linus has made my professional life immeasurably happier by giving my a solid x86 Unix and the source. Frank who? Mario gets the vote 'cos I need the net plumbing." ... "Frank has such a tremendous influence on so many different start-up companies that each is impacting the future of networking!" ... "Linus has had more effect on the internet than most anyone. I know Mario and Scott and Mario's done more to really effect change. I whole-heartedly support Scott's work and interoperability testing in general, I just think that Mario's work has changed the internet to a greater extent." ... "Linus Torvalds and Linux are tops. Scott and the UNH Interop Lab provide a great environment and service to the internetworking community." ... "Because if he's (Mazzola) not happy, I won't be able to pay my bills."
Jan 8:
Two upsets as TeleChoice's Christine Heckart (15 seed) beat #2 Lou Gertsner of IBM 221-98 while #9 Joe Nacchio of Qwest defeated Mike Brady of Merrill Lynch, 143-81. Comments:
"Lou has proven to be the best over time and in tough situations and economies." ... "Joe is doing the hard but right things for Qwest." ... "I think that nacchio's run has finally come to an end." ... "I work for the other loser." ... "Qwest employee & belief few people can compete with Gerstner for influence." ... "Qwest has the resources, and also the business responsibility, to be much more impactive than Merrill Lynch." ...
"Gerstner has done IBM some good and Qwest is in the heart of the business, Merrill Lynch is just a technology consumer." ... "The two real innovators in the network workd today. Follow these men to greatness." ... "Telecoms have taken a beating lately but over the next 5-10 years they will be key players in how global networks are used." ... "Joe Nacchio has gumption. Christine is the underdog." ... "Mike Brady is building a New-World infrastructure and revolutionizing his industry. Qwest is tied to Old-World TDM switches. Bad move. Christine Heckart weilds a broad influence through the press, While Lou Gerstner seems to be doing little to stretch the envelope." ... "Mike Brady and Christine Heckart are the bomb-diggy!" ... "Joe sees into the future. It doesn't matter what Wall Street or others think of this man - he acts on instinct which has proven accurate for him thus far. Lou is NOT the man. IBM will be the surprise downfall of the 2000's." ... "Qwest is a better technology success story. Lou Gerstner. Need I say more?"
Jan 2:
Ivan Seidenberg defeats Tom Siebel, 18-6 and Microsoft anti-trust judge Colleen Kolar-Kotelly edges out Jerry Parrick 14-10. Comments:
"Siebel cares about education as well as great CRM software (www.siebelscholars.com) and Jerry picks up his own phone." ... "The telephone company is everywhere. How the judge rules will decide is DOJ is really interested in stopping Microsoft's 'way' of doing business. Stated another way, can money buy justice in America?" ... "Tom Siebel for not being US only Jerry Parrick for offering/admitting a different non-perfect product." ... "Ivan is a better CEO and has a hell of a lot more to handle in a telecomms company. I voted for Jerry because Colleen is a lawyer (have to be one to be a judge). "
