According to some employees at Sycamore Networks, "Desh is the man!" And, they backed it up, propelling #4-seed Desh Deshpande, co-founder and chairman of Sycamore, to a 280-111 victory over #1-seed Craig Barrett, CEO of Intel. Also advancing is Pekka Ala-Pietila, president of Nokia, with a 130-118 win over Lt. Gen. John Woodward, deputy CIO, U.S. Air Force. Comments:

"It's Intel please, and Nokia my buddy." ... "Desh rules, Barrett drools. US Military can kick stylish Finn designs any day of the week." ... "How could anyone vote for desh, look where his company is and they are not even close to annoucing a new customer...ever."

Users in our poll do not seem to get much credit. Witness today's defeat of UPS VP of I/S John Nallin (a #5 seed) at the hands of #4-seed Desh Deshpande, co-founder and chairman of Sycamore, 130-33. Also moving on is Craig Barrett, CEO of Intel and #1 seed, by virtue of a 74-26 victory over #8-seed Jeff Schiller, the IETF's area director for security. Comments:

"The Patriots won the Super Bowl, and I'll do anything to get the day off tomorrow for the celebration parade and rally!" ... "UPS has lousy customer service. Any man with power should be capable of changing that simple thing within the company."

Jan 29:

Larry's tournament ride has come to an end. Oracle's flamboyant Chairman and CEO Larry Ellison, a #2 seed, fell at the hands of #10-seed Pekka Ala-Pietila, president of Nokia, 51-42. Also, the Air Force's Lt. Gen. John "Jack" Woodward, a #3 seed, defeated GM CIO Ralph Szygenda, 53-37. Comments:

"On Ellison: Every circus needs a clown. On Woodward: Tank beats car." ... "Ralph was CIO of the Year (also I have seen him in action!)"

Jan 24:

More voter fraud today. Someone seems to have programmed their machine to vote 136 extra times for John McHale. Eliminating the obvious fraudulent votes, #1-seed Craig Barrett of Intel defeated #16-seed John McHale, chairman and CEO of TippingPoint Technologies, 114-18. In our other match, things proceeded more orderly, with #4-seed Desh Deshpande, co-founder and chairman of Sycamore Networks, defeating #13-seed Dave Roberson, COO of Hitachi Data Systems, 109-43. Comments:

"Craig's the man!! I believe Intel has several tricks up their sleeve." ... "Desh is the man!" ... "Storage and servers rule the IT universe." ... "Intel is a long-time fav of mine and I feel Sycamore gets optical." ... "Desh's track record in starting up 2 very successful companies and his many contributions to the network industry."

Jan 17:

Oracle big kahuna Larry Ellison advanced to the second round with a 69-26 victory over Interpact's Winn Schwartau, a #15 seed. In the battle of the phone, Nokia Pekka Ala-Pietila, a #10 seed, upset AT&T President David Dorman, a #7 seed, 58-35. Comments:

"I really really dislike Ellison. Nokia is miles ahead of AT&T in the 'vision thing'." ... "It's Larry, come on. And Nokia is part of the next-gen and AT&T is just trying to hang on." ... "Larry's ego will win hands down..." ... "Security is an issue many businesses and vendors don't pay enough attention to it up front. Schwartau gets my vote. While I normally wouldn't give AT&T anything, if Dorman's 'house' is truely the way he does business, then he gets the nod." ... "Ellison weighs a lot and could jump from the top rope, crushing Winn. Dormann will be able to use the old, heavy, black AT&T phones to pummell PAP."

Jan 10:

A rare event in our game: The two higher seeds advanced to the second round. Air Force Lt. General John Woodward defeated the Burton Group's David Passmore, 35-21, and UPS tech guy John Nallin delivered CIMI Corp.'s Tom Nolle to elimination, 42-16. Comments:

"Both the AF and UPS have outstanding reputations for inovation and cost effective management. UPS is a classic study for the B-school crowd. I will geenrally pick doers over thinkers." ... "I enjoy David's column - he has more exposure than the Lt. Gen. As for John Nallin, we are very happy customers of UPS. they have continued to use technology to their customers benefit. As a small buisness we use Myups.com to ship our packages. even thoiugh we ar small peanuts to them - they provide us with all of the services that are relevent to us - at very low cost of business to them." ... "Woodward = tangible results (from the gov't no less!) Passmore = talk about it/IT Nolle = talk about it/IT Nallin = spend money for nothin' (where are the results of $1 billion???)" ... "I read Passmore all the time and he simply one of the most diverse players around. I have had the opportunity to talk with Nallin and he was very informative. Now are they the most powerful. Passmore will be or should be a finalist I believe."

Jan 7:

Jeff Schiller of the IETF defeats Mike Lazardis of RIM, 31-21 and Ralph Syzgenda of General Motors beats Marc Benioff Salesforce.com of 35-17. Comments:

"RIM should be facing a critical year, recovering face from the Motient fiasco as well as launching a telephony product. I hope they succeed in breaking out of the Finincial Services vertical. Syzgenda: Let's see what he can keep doing to unify all the internal enterprise kingdoms within GM...Much more of a challenge with upside potential than Benioff faces."

"Jeff does what he does it for all the right reasons, to see the Internet grow in ways that make sense rather than make a corporation rich. For Marc and Ralph, Marc's work offers more overall value."

"I like what RiM is doing and I've worked with Marc Benioff."
