Taken on new identities
These four companies are operating under new names, with new strategies

Loudcloud
Selected in 2000.
Network management tools.
Update: In August 2002, sold off its e-commerce hosting business to EDS and renamed itself Opsware after its net management software. Opsware posted a $3 million net loss for 2002, on revenue of $38 million.
Manage.com
Selected in 1999.
Real-time business analysis software.
Update: Changed name to Cogency Software to reflect move beyond original Web management software business.

NoWonder
Selected in 2000.
Collaborative CRM applications.
Update: Changed from an online technical service and support site for consumers to an online marketplace of IT support and services called ePeople, which now bills itself as a provider of collaborative CRM applications for companies selling complex products or services. The company remains privately held.

Nextlink
Selected in 1999.
Competitive local exchange services.
Update: Originally a wireless broadband provider that went public and morphed into a provider of voice, data and hosting services called XO Communications after it bought Concentric Network for $2.9 billion in June 2000. XO filed for bankruptcy protection last June and emerged in January, having reduced its debt from $5 billion to $500 million in the proceeding. XO is now controlled by billionaire financier Carl Icahn.
