SpiderSoftware gets Warped

The shakeout in the Web acceleration and caching market continues, as dynamic-caching software vendor SpiderSoftware ends its independent run.

Last week, Warp Technology Holdings said it is planning to acquire SpiderSoftware, which will retain its name and become a subsidiary of Warp Technology Holdings. Spider will share engineering and marketing resources with Warp Solutions, an application acceleration company that is also a subsidiary of Warp Technology Holdings.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but I spoke with executives of both companies who explained the reasoning behind the acquisition.

Spider CEO Greg Parker says SpiderSoftware just hasn't seen a lot of direct sales in North America. And while interest has increased in the last few months, he says the post-Sept. 11 environment resulted in the North American caching market " drying up for a period of time. "

Meanwhile, Karl Douglas, president and CEO of Warp Solutions, says the addition of the SpiderSoftware products will enable the two companies to serve the entire spectrum of customers looking for Web acceleration products, from large corporations to small businesses.

Warp will continue to focus on hardware, assimilating SpiderSoftware's SpiderBox into its Warp 2063 edge transaction accelerator. SpiderSoftware, on the other hand, will be able to sell lower-priced software into the low-end market.

Parker will become CTO of Warp Technology Holdings and will sit on its board of directors. Douglas remains president and CEO of Warp Solutions and Warp Technology Holdings.
