Vendors offer open-file backup

By Deni Connor , NetworkWorld.com , 12/16/2002

Peer Software and St. Bernard Software this week announced software that saves business-critical open or locked files, which are often skipped when the rest of the network is backed up or synchronized.

Peer Software combined its PeerSync synchronization and backup software with St. Bernard’s Open File Data Protection technology to create a product that lets IT managers protect their applications even when they are in use.

Organizations normally run software applications such as databases or Microsoft Outlook that need to be continually accessed. Backup operations interrupt these operations, causing downtime and lost productivity. With St. Bernard’s Embedded Open File Manager Software, spreadsheets, database files are protected as backup occurs without forcing users to log out of the application.

PeerSynch runs on Microsoft Windows. St. Bernard Software’s Open File Manager runs on Microsoft Windows and NetWare 4, 5 and 6.

PeerSync starts at $500. St. Bernard’s Open File Manager starts at $650 per server. Both products are available now.
