Vernier Networks has released an updated version of its wireless LAN management software and launched a new range of wireless controllers. Both sets of products are aimed at boosting security and simplify administration of enterprise WLANs.

Version 3.0 of the Vernier Networks System software adds:

  • Virtual LAN tagging, based on IEEE 802.1q, to create a wireless VLAN based on user ID, group affiliation, or location.
  • Internet Group Management Protocol, which lets a data stream send the same information to several wireless users or groups at the same time.
  • Programmable access control, which lets net managers apply security policies based on several criteria, such as user identity, time of day, affiliation, and location.

The latest version can automatically manage clients with a range of different settings, such as DNS and IP settings. An automatic proxy server means that users can access the network no matter how their browser is configured.

The software runs on all Vernier controllers, which sits between wireless LAN access points and the wired infrastructure to secure and manage wireless traffic.

Vernier 6500 Series is the company’s latest range of controllers and is available in three models. New on all three is a copper gigabit Ethernet interface. In addition, all three can, as options, support additional Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, and a new optional Triple DES encryption card to speed up encrypted packets. All three models include an integrated 10/100/1000 uplink.

The Access Manager model is priced at $3,695; the Control Server model is $6,495, and the Integrated System model is $7,995. The new software version is available as a free upgrade to existing customers and ships as a standard feature on all Vernier controllers.
