Sprint is enhancing its managed frame relay and ATM services with monitoring support from Visual Networks.

The carrier announced Wednesday that its Managed CSU/DSU service customers can now more closely monitor network performance and verify their service-level agreements (SLA).

Though Sprint has been using Visual Networks CSU/DSUs, the carrier did not turn on the WAN performance management features for its managed customers until now, says Mickey O'Dell, director of Sprint managed services.

The management software includes capacity planning and diagnostic tools so users can keep better track of their network needs and uptime. Customers can also more easily monitor their SLAs including network availability, packet loss and throughput.

Customers can either generate reports on their own or Sprint could provide these reports to them.

Frame relay and ATM customers that already have Visual Networks hardware deployed at their site can expect a "small" installation charge for updating their software, O'Dell says. Customers that require new equipment will incur a higher one-time installation charge.

While Sprint would not offer specific pricing, O'Dell says that managed service customers could expect to pay 30% to 40% more on top of their monthly management fees.

The management enhancement is available now.

The company is planning a series of service enhancements for its managed customers that it will be announcing over the next few months.
