The U.S. government's National Infrastructure Protection Center, which issues warnings related to cybersecurity, on Monday urged U.S. Web site operators and ISPs to be on the alert against a cyberattack expected to begin late Monday.

The NIPC, which issued the alert said it received "credible but nonspecific information that wide-scale hacker attacks" are being planned, "possibly emanating from Western Europe." The NIPC said it will update information as it becomes available.

The NIPC urged the public to report suspected network attack activity to local law enforcement or online, or contact the NIPC Watch and Warning Unit at 202-323-3205 or e-mail.

Some companies providing managed security services say they are taking the notice to heart, but so far have detected no unusual surge in traffic flows or hacker activity. Riptech, for one, reported no noticeable increase in attacks on its customers around the world.
