Cable & Wireless is investing $1 billion to expand its international ISP presence through acquisitions and a network buildout.
Cable & Wireless yesterday announced that its acquiring eight ISPs throughout Europe and plans on spending $500 million to link up its various ISP networks over a new OC -192 backbone.

The ISPs that Cable & Wireless is acquiring include Xpoint in Austria, online Internet in Belgium, ISDnet in France, Unidata and DSLogic-DSNet both in Italy, grupo Intercom in Spain, agri.ch and Petrel Communications both in Switzerland.
Last year Cable & Wireless acquired ISPs in Germany, Sweden and the U.K. as well. As of now, Cable & Wireless has only linked up its U.K. point-of-presence to its Internet backbone that spans the U.S.
But by April, Cable & Wireless expects to have 18 European cities connected to its Internet backbone with a total of 200 cities connected by the end of 2002.
The International expansion will be critical to Cable & Wireless' multinational business users that want to deploy the ISPs virtual private network or managed firewall services to sites throughout Europe.
