Cabletron's Spectrum morphs into 'Aprisma'

Cabletron's Spectrum business unit will further distance itself from Cabletron by today taking the name "Aprisma Management Technologies."

The business unit is now a separate company, although it is still mostly owned by Cabletron. Aprisma makes the network management software Spectrum, and has been trying to erase industry perceptions that it is tied to the hardware side of Cabletron's business.

Spectrum hasn't supported network hardware as well as other management platforms, because network hardware makers view Cabletron as a competitor and have been reluctant to work closely with one of its business units.

As part of the effort to achieve some independence, Aprisma is also announcing that it is joining the Cisco Management Connection program. The move will allow Aprisma to integrate Spectrum more closely with CiscoWorks 2000 management software, the company says.

The Spectrum business unit has tried once before to rename itself. The unit was going to make a much-publicized splash at NetWorld+Interop 99 in Atlanta, but it found out at the last minute that its chosen name - "Netuitive" - had already been taken.

The management and operation of Aprisma has been slowly divorced from its parent company over the last year. Cabletron says it may keep the company as a subsidiary, sell it off or launch it as a completely independent entity.
