Focusing on its Java and Jini technologies, Sun Microsystems last week rearranged some of the executives in its Software Products and Platforms group and created a new Java Software Development Group.

Headed up by Rich Green, former vice president of the Solaris Products Group and now vice president of Java Software Development, the new Java group will oversee and be responsible for the development and product engineering for Java and Jini platforms.

"With these organizational changes, Sun is integrating Java and Jini technology development to better serve the entire spectrum of web-based product opportunities, while also fostering greater partner involvement in the ongoing evolution of the Java and Jini technologies through the Java Community Process," said Patricia Sueltz, president of Sun's Software Products and Platforms group, in a statement.

Former vice president of the Java Software group Jon Kannegaard, along with former vice presidents James Gosling and Jim Mitchell, will move to the Sun Labs division, with Mitchell leading Sun Labs and Kannegaard acting as the link between Sun Labs' research and development and the various product groups.

Rob Gingell, formerly vice president of architecture and technology, is now chief technology officer for the Software Products and Platforms group. David Gee will also join Sun, shedding his previous role as IBM executive to fill George Paolini's spot as vice president of marketing for Sun Software Products and Platforms. Paolini has been named vice president of Java Community Development, and will be in charge of spreading Java and Jini's reach in the industry.

Sun Microsystems Inc, in Palo Alto, Calif., is at www.sun.com.
