Congestion plaguing MCI WorldCom frame relay net

An apparent case of traffic congestion is blocking frame relay traffic for some MCI WorldCom customers, according to reports Monday. The problem appears to be hitting hardest at very high-volume users, including ISPs that use dedicated frame relay connections to Internet backbone hubs operated by MCI WorldCom or its Internet unit, UUNet.

The problem is widespread enough that UUNet posted a notice on its network status page at midday. "MCI WorldCom is experiencing intermittent frame relay outages across the U.S.," the alert reads. "From time to time these outages may briefly affect UUNET dedicated customer connections."

Problems with MCI WorldCom frame connections have also been reported on-line in recent evenings.

But either an outage or slowdown in network speed does not immediately appear to be universal. One enterprise customer with MCI WorldCom frame relay service, software company J.D. Edwards, has not experienced outages, according to Mark Endry, director of telecommunications networks.

UUNET also reports on its Web site and its support-service phone recording that its backbone is at "normal" status and that its dial-up, DNS and news services are also considered "normal."

The cause of the problem is not yet known. UUNET says MCI WorldCom network engineers are working to resolve the problem.
