Cable & Wireless USA is upgrading its Internet network with high-end backbone routers. So far the service provider has deployed four Juniper Networks M40 routers and plans on reaching its goal of having 44 deployed by year-end.
This latest rollout is part of a $500 million network upgrade project that also includes speeding up Cable & Wireless' entire Internet backbone to support OC-48, 2.5G bit/sec, says Randy Catoe, vice president of Internet engineering and operations. Today, Cable & Wireless' backbone maxes out at OC-12, 622M bit/sec transmission speeds. Cable & Wireless' M40 upgrade accounts for more than $50 million of the company's overall $500 million network investment.
Earlier this year, Cable & Wireless announced that it was also deploying 18 FORE Systems' ForeRunner ASX 4000 ATM switches throughout its Internet backbone. These ATM switches today support OC-48 and are expected to support OC-192 speeds in the future, which is the direction that Cable & Wireless hopes to take its network.
