Candle released a new version of its middleware that makes it easier to connect Web applications with back-end business applications and databases.

The Roma Business Services Platform (BSP) 2.0 features interfaces, services and tools that let IT groups link applications and deploy them to the Web and other clients.

Candle engineers redesigned BSP to handle a greater number of users more quickly and reliably, according to company officials. The changes include a caching service for the directory and a new error recovery code.

Support for HP-UX is another newly added feature. The software now runs on most major Unix brands, Windows NT and MVS. Application developers will be pleased by Candle's new support for C++, Java and ActiveX.

A new management tool, called Roma Application Manager (RAM), lets network administrators dissect a complex set of application interactions over a WAN, allowing them to see quickly where a bottleneck or problem might be occurring. RAM includes an existing Candle product, called ETEWatch, for managing application response times.

Candle also introduced an interface to link Roma directly to SAP AG's R/3 application suite. Interfaces to other, similar software products will be released later.

The other parts of Roma BSP include:

  • Roma Broker, which lets a network manager plug in third-party data transformation and routing products.
  • Roma Developer, which provides a set of interface services to developers working with popular tools such as PowerBuilder and Microsoft Visual Basic.
  • A graphical program to create an overall application workflow.
