Pilot Network Services today announced its secure virtual private network (VPN) service.

Pilot, which has specialized in security services, is now rolling out its Corporate Partner Networking VPN service.

The service will let business users connect their existing frame relay, leased-line or IP WAN connections to Pilot's centralized secure hub.

Pilot has been offering its customers Dynamic Security services based on Pilot-developed equipment that supports the Internet Engineering Task Force's IP Security protocol.

The Alameda, Calif.-based service provider is now combining its security services with users' needs to keep their VPNs secure.

Most VPN services today are offered via one transport medium such as a frame relay network or the public Internet.

Pilot is telling customers that they don't have to swap out their existing connections to have a secure VPN. But it's difficult to tell if users will save money by actually keeping their existing connections because pricing is not yet available.

The Corporate Partner Networking service users will each use client software from VPNet which Pilot licences from the equipment manufacturer.

The service is slated for availability in the first quarter of 1999.
