After Research In Motion won a patent last week for its single mailbox integration, it promptly sued wireless messaging vendor Glenayre for patent infringement. RIM's technology redirects information between a host computer (such as an office PC or server) and a BlackBerry device while maintaining a common electronic address between them. Interestingly, on the same day, competitors Palm and Extended Systems announced the termination of their proposed merger, which was supposed to supply Palm with the mailbox integration technology it needs to produce a BlackBerry competitor.
Standards-based power line home network products took a giant step closer to retail shelves last week as Intellon shipped the first chipset based on the HomePlug specification. Expected to ship by Thanksgiving, the first HomePlug products will allow data transfer speeds of 14M bit/sec. The HomePlug Alliance is an industry group made up of more than 80 computer and consumer electronics companies.

CMS Software last week rolled out ABSplus, a software package that lets remote and mobile workers back up data on their notebook computers to a special PC Card-based hard disk drive. When the device is attached, ABSplus software self-installs and initiates a backup automatically. The ABS-plus hard drive is bootable, so if the hard disk fails, users can access the data stored on the ABS drive. Shipping this month, ABSplus includes disaster-recovery software and starts at $330.
