Juniper Networks Tuesday unveiled an addition to its G-series cable modem termination systems designed for smaller multicable system operators.

The G1 CMTS is targeted at smaller cable systems operating in space constrained environments with high radio frequency (RF) noise impairment conditions. The DOCSIS 1.1-compliant G1 CMTS can be deployed in cable environments with very low signal to noise ratios where previously only proprietary solutions were available, Juniper claims.

The product is currently in use by Yaw Jenq, a Taiwanese service provider offering subscriber-based IP services over cable.

The G1 CMTS can run 10M bit/sec upstream channels, Juniper says.  The G1 CMTS provides two downstream channels and eight upstream channels in a single rack unit device.

With all channels operating at maximum data rates, the G1 CMTS delivers symmetrical bandwidth of 80M bit/sec downstream and 80M bit/sec upstream, Juniper claims. This level of bandwidth allows small market cable operators to offer services such as tiered data services, gaming, peer-to-peer applications, multicast video, voice over IP, and business VPNs, the company says.

The G1 CMTS also offers noise tolerance and cancellation, automated operations features, and trouble-shooting tools to minimize service disruptions and operational maintenance costs and deployment, Juniper says.

The G1 CMTS is available now.
