Yahoo, Cisco to submit e-mail ID spec to IETF

Yahoo and Cisco are submitting their combined e-mail authentication specification to the IETF to be considered as an industry standard. DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) combines Yahoo's DomainKeys and Cisco's Internet Identified Mail. DKIM is designed to give e-mail providers a mechanism to verify the origin of e-mail messages and combat spoofing. Spammers use spoofing to change an e-mail message's header information to deceive recipients. (Read the story)

As Cisco and Yahoo state their DKIM case, some Internet thought leaders recently met to discuss a wide range of methods to rid the Web of malicious traffic. The Steps to Reducing Unwanted Traffic on the Internet (SRUTI) workshop brought together more than 50 academics, as well as technical staff from equipment vendors and ISPs to develop methods to cut down on spam, viruses, worms and DDoS attacks. Participants exposed fresh ideas to expert criticism, sometimes resulting in helpful suggestions and sometimes pointing out significant problems. (Read the story)

Sprint is acquiring its second largest wireless affiliate, US Unwired, for $1.3 billion. The acquisition will put two separate legal actions that US Unwired has against Sprint to bed after the deal closes. In 2003, US Unwired filed a suit in Louisiana alleging racketeering and breach of contract. And last month, US Unwired also filed an injunction to block Sprint’s merger with Nextel. The affiliate has now filed a stay with the courts regarding both actions. (Read the story)
