802.22 (Wireless Regional Area Networks)
A possible IEEE specification for using the "white space" between broadcast-TV channels for wireless broadband.
In October, 2004, IEEE set up a working group to develop the 802.22 Standard for Wireless Regional Area Networks (WRAN).
The idea behind 802.22 is that there are considerable unused frequencies between VHF and UHF broadcast channels between 54 and 865 MHz - which could be used to beam wireless broadband as far as 40 kilometers, to serve areas not well served by alternatives such as cable or DSL.
The FCC has proposed opening much of this between-channel spectrum to such unlicensed uses.
