Missing a trick

Companies are missing a trick by banning facebook. They're missing out on valuable marketing and networking opportunities. It's very short-sighted of them.

I don't think one should blame the companies executives for resorting to such measure taking into consideration that this undermine productivity. But i don't such measures will be effective in recruiting new employees who are so accustomed to be connected always.Suffering From Social Networking Anxiety Disorder (SNAD)(http://www.internetevolution.com/author.asp?section_id=466&doc_id=154710&F_src=flftwo)

It's not like social

It's not like social networking sites are the only productivity drainers out there and I think that any employee who lets Facebook get in the way of their job would let anything else get in the way of their job if SN sites weren't available. Blocking SN sites just forces people to find other ways to waste their time, which they will. I'd rather be able to monitor the wasted time of my employees than wonder what they're doing.

Social may be OK; it's other activity you might want to know abo

Employers know about the social activity on their computers because employees talk about it. But, what kind of computer activities are employees engaging in that employers don't know about?

If they are gambling, communicating with adult web sites or even worse, sharing proprietary information while using company computers, then employers are missing the most damaging computer activity their employees are engaging in by simply blocking social sites.

A keylogger placed on company computers would log every keystroke and let the employer know exactly what kinds of activities their employees are engaging in.

This information can be used in a variety of ways. Besides disciplinary reasons, the keystrokes logged in can be used to reward a faithful, conscientious employee as well.

If employers are really serious about securing their company computers they should look into installing keyloggers on their computers.

I have the home, corporate as well as the forensic versions on my website but you can get them other places as well.

Leave the Social Networking at Home

Leave the social networking stuff at home and whoever suggested placing keyloggers on pcs is crazy. You would have to set up a whole department just to review all the keylogging activity.
I beleive in the KISS principal (Keep It Sweet and Simple) or maybe it's the "Just Say No" principal. If you are at work, you are getting paid to work. Just don't do it and if you do and you lose your job, that's too bad.
It does no good to lock down your network from the outside and to let your users on the inside do all kinds of stupid stuff.

And these will be the companies who will be closing their doors.
