Poor software engineering

Microsoft is known for getting a product out the door with lots of bells and whistles. They are not known for good software engineering or good programming techniques. My bets are on the guys that know how to write good tight standardized code engineered properly from the start.
And then there are the industry standards that Microsoft likes to flout and re-invent their own. I would like to see a bake-off.
